INSTRUCTIONS FOR HORSE REGISTRATION

General Information: To be eligible for registration in the purebred section of the Akhal-Teke General Studbook, both parents of the foal (horse) must be registered in the purebred section of the Akhal-Teke General Studbook. Positive proof of parentage must be documented by the DNA analyses, and in some cases also by the blood type and by specific chemical markers present in the blood.

Specific Instructions: To register a horse with The Akhal-Teke Horse Registry, Inc. (“Registry”), you will need to submit to the Registry the following documents:

1./  Completed, signed and dated Application for Horse Registration. You may download the Application form from this website, or request a hard copy from the Registry Office.

2./  Legal Proof of Ownership, such as a signed Breeders Certification on the Application form if the applicant is also the foal’s breeder, or a valid signed Bill of Sale or similar legal proof of ownership.

3./  Four (4) photographs, each picture showing the whole horse including all four legs down to the hooves, as follows:

one picture from the left side, one from the right side, one from the front, and one from the back; plus additional pictures of the specific markings on the head and/or other parts of the body.

4./  Results of the DNA analyses, performed by an internationally recognized laboratory, that had been approved by the Registry.

5./  For horses whose one or both parents do NOT have the results of the DNA analyses filed with the VNIIK Akhalteke Genera Studbook, or with the Registry, in addition to the DNA the blood type and the chemical markers analyses must also be obtained.

6./  A sample of hair with follicle roots, similar to the sample sent to the laboratory for DNA analyses, enclosed in a small new mailing envelope, marked by the written name of the horse, date of birth, the names of the sire and the dam, and the name of the owner. This hair sample shall be retained by the Registry.

7./ Initially send no funds with your application. After your application has been accepted by VNIIK for Registration of your Akhal-Teke Horse, we will notify you and you must then send a check or money order made payable to the Akhal-Teke Horse Registry, Inc., for $100.00. This Akhal-Teke Horse Registry, Inc., will forward said funds to VNIIK to complete the said Akhal-Teke Horse’s Registration in the Official Akhal-Teke General Stud Book.

Instructions for obtaining and shipping of samples for DNA and blood analyses:

In the past, parentage of Akhal-Teke foals was confirmed by blood analyses. At this time most horse registries in North America use DNA to confirm parentage of their foals. During the transition period it is necessary to have both blood and DNA performed on all horses in the population. Since Akhal-Teke breed still has many horses with only blood analyses, we need to ascertain that all horses can be properly identified before registration, and that no horse will loose it’s pure bred status due to the lack of an appropriate test.

Since most US horse registries now have used DNA for a number of years, most US laboratories now perform only DNA tests. However, many mature Akhal-Teke horses today still have only blood tests in their files.  For any horse to fulfill registration requirements to prove parentage, all three horses (both parents and the foal) now must have DNA tests. If one or both parents do not have a DNA test in the files, then they either need to have a DNA test performed, or if that is not possible (in cases when the horse is already dead) then all three (parents and the foal) must have blood analyses, in addition to the DNA test for the newly registered horse.

We have identified a laboratory, Shelterwood Laboratories (address below), that will perform blood tests as well as DNA tests for us, but they need from us a batch of 50 or more samples to make the analyses economically feasible. Unless we find another accredited laboratory with capability to run batches with fewer samples, we may have to arrange to have blood analyses done only one time every year.

Taking samples for DNA analyses: For each tested horse, obtain a hair sample by pulling hair from the mane or tail, few hairs at the time, until you have about 30-40 hairs. Align the hair roots carefully next to each other but DO NOT TOUCH the roots. Wrap scotch tape around the hair tuft about 1-2 inches (3-5 cm) from the hair roots to keep he bundle bound together, cut off the long hair on the side distant from the roots, place the hair tuft immediately in a new mailing envelope, mark the envelope with the name of the horse, year of birth, name of the sire and dam, and the name of the owner, but do not seal the envelope.  Place sample envelopes of all horses in a mailing envelope and mail to the laboratory. Prepare second identical samples for mailing to the Akhal-Teke Horse Registry, Inc.

Blood samples:

Draw blood in 2 separate tubes to obtain:

1/ Blood serum (not hemolyzed) obtained from a blood clot, usually obtained in a vacutainer tube with red stopper, or in a syringe; and

2/ Blood from a vacutainer with yellow stopper containing sodium citrate as an anticoagulant.

Ask your veterinarian for help you draw the blood samples. Do not forget to mark all tubes with the horses name, date of birth, and owners name.

The Registry will have a supply of yellow stopper vacutainer tubes, and we can mail them to you if you think you may need them.
